Swimming aids for the disabled for a person who can not use their legs

Hi there,

Thank you for this web page, it is very helpful. I wondered if you could help me. I always used to enjoy swimming but since becoming disabled 7 years ago I have had a few tries to get back into swimming but I've just found it too difficult and it's flared my condition up as well. But it's something I would like to get back into as psychologically I think it would be good for me and because I enjoy it and find it relaxing.

I have CRPS and I have nerve pain in my right leg all the time and I'm unable to use it. I'm looking for mobility aids in the water, something that can support my legs, strap them together even to stop me from using them and then I can swim with my arms. Can you recommend anything?

Many thanks xx

Hi Gemma,

Thanks for getting in touch, I'm pleased to know you find my web page useful to you :) I have had a good hard think over the last few days and only come to one conclusion in the end. After long thought I think that the best way forward for you is to use some kind of support in the middle i.e. a swim jacket or belt. This would give you much support needed in the middle of your body. This would enable you to swim with your arms only with your legs dragging without you sinking.

I don’t think it would be a good idea to completely tie your legs together, I don’t think this would be safe, you say you have no use in your right leg due to pain, I'm assuming your left it ok this can be used if needed if tied up you would be unable to use in emergency.

These swim aids will keep you supported in the middle so that you are free to use your arms and you can swim at ease, you will be totally unrestricted and can swim with your arms only you don’t need to use your legs and are designed for use for the disabled...

I hope this is of some help to you...you don’t have to buy from this site I just thought these swim aids look good there are plenty on the market that are just as good.

Try this link to get the idea of what I'm talking about then look to see what suits you but at least you have some idea of what i am talking about,:)
